Ethan blinked, looking at his mother for a moment before he could even begin to find the words he was looking for.
"Ethan, it isn't as though..."
"Who's the father?" Ethan interrupted, his voice suddenly hot with anger. Somehow he just couldn't think of his mother being, well, a mother again.
"That's actually a little bit of an unknown," Cassandra replied, patting her perfectly flat stomach. "It's only been a couple months, I'm sure, and a couple months ago was..."
"The Festival," Ethan finished. Of all the things Ethan didn't want to think about, high on the top of the list was his mother being an active part of Daria's Fall Festival. He didn't even really like to think about what he had done while under the heavy influence of incense and some sort of drugged drink. A bit of it still wasn't clear in his mind, but he was most thankful that not one of the pile of women he'd woken up beside had been his mother.
"Except I thought Daria cast a spell so no one could conceive..."
Ethan felt like hitting his head against a wall.
"Mother, Daria casts an individual spell on each of her chosen priestesses and warriors so they can't conceive while they're in servitude to her. Your goddess-self should have taken the time to cast that spell on yourself."
Cassandra winced. "It's not as though I planned this, you know. But I did always want you to have a little sister or brother. And it isn't as if I'm some dried up old hag. I'm in excellent shape."
"Can I just go and try to forget we ever had this discussion?" Ethan wanted out of there. He wanted out immediately. If he ever, ever thought there was any chance his mother could be having the child of...
He cursed his own existence for a moment before turning and looking back out the window into the woods. Everything was as it always was, dark and gloomy. Just how he felt.
Cassandra left without saying another word. Some things she'd never asked for details on, and some things she regretted and wished she could change with all her heart.
